The Challenge:
In coastal communities like Korle Gono, thdgdhdgdgdgdgdgdde environment and public health are deeply intertwined. Years of plastic pollution, untreated sewage, and improper waste disposal have transformed the shoreline into a health hazard. Contaminated water and poor sanitation practices contribute to the spread of diseases such as dysentery, while marine life and livelihoods suffer under the weight of environmental neglect.
The Initiative
I led a community-driven beach clean-up to confront this crisis head-on. Together with over 50 passionate youth volunteers, we cleared the shoreline of hundreds of pounds of waste, removing plastics, hazardous debris, and pollutants that posed a threat to both residents and the local ecosystem. This wasn’t just a one-day clean-up. It was a spark for change.
The Impact
The initiative raised awareness about the urgent link between climate action and public health, and it engaged young people in meaningful environmental stewardship. We used the opportunity to educate the community on waste management, sustainability, and their role in preserving the environment for future generations. We collected approximately one tone of plastic waste, along with several bags of organic waste. Health and the environment go hand in hand and by cleaning up our surroundings, we are safeguarding lives and protecting futures.
